When we talk about breast cancer, which is the number one cancer affecting Thai women, it is often accompanied by misconceptions about whether or not wearing a bra plays a role. While there are many other factors involved in the development of breast cancer—such as age, environment, and genetics—people often can’t help but wonder if bras or underwear are somehow the culprits behind this serious disease.
In our research, we found a study from the United States that suggested a link between wearing tight or overly restrictive bras and an increased risk of breast cancer in women. This was especially found in women who wear bras constantly, even while sleeping. Tight bras, in particular, can put extra pressure on the breasts, and over time, women may not even notice any abnormal symptoms that could become dangerous. One system affected by tight bras is the lymphatic system, which consists of small tubes that connect to the breast tissue. These tubes are responsible for carrying away toxins, waste, cancer cells, viruses, bacteria, and other harmful substances. Wearing a bra forces the breasts to hold their shape continuously, blocking the lymphatic flow from the chest and causing fluid build-up, swelling, and the formation of small sacs or lumps. The toxins that should have been flushed out end up accumulating in the lymphatic system due to the restricted circulation caused by tight bras. While many scientists and researchers have debated the accuracy of these findings, arguing that breast cancer is primarily caused by environmental and genetic factors, there remains no conclusive evidence that wearing tight or ill-fitting bras is a direct risk factor for breast cancer.
At the same time, an American oncologist addressed the belief that wearing a bra to bed every night leads to breast cancer, stating that bras of all types have no proven link to cancer. The only thing that bras and cancer have in common is that they both relate to the breasts. Since women who are overweight tend to wear bras more frequently, and since being overweight is a recognized risk factor for breast cancer, this may have contributed to the misunderstanding that bras cause cancer.
Blaming bras for this issue might be a bit harsh, as wearing a bra has both advantages and disadvantages. It’s also very much a personal choice whether to wear a bra or not.
